In cooperation with Vilkhivtsi local government, Heritage Springs Inc., a nonprofit organization incorporated in the USA,  launched the renovation of Vilkhivtsi Synagogue in October 2020. Built in approximately 1705, the building is one of the oldest synagogues in Ukraine.

“In summer 2019, representatives of the Jewish community from abroad attended Vilkhivtsi synagogue as a part of the Holocaust conference in Zakarpattia.  Shortly thereafter, the representatives reached out to Vilkhivtsi local government about returning the synagogue to the descendants of the Jews who historically resided in Vilkhivtsi, its renovation and establishment of a museum.  The residents of Vilkhivtsi and the local government embraced the request since for a long time the synagogue has been on the verge of collapse.  Our community is one of the most successful communities in Ukraine, and we are glad that we could build trust with the descendants of the Jewish community from Vilkhivtsi all of whom reside abroad, in order to preserve this ancient synagogue for future generations,” stated Emilia Krychfalushi, the representative of Vilkhivtsi local government.

Mariia Khorun, Esq., a New York licensed attorney, a founder of a social impact company Timothy and who is a board trustee of the charitable organization Heritage Springs Inc., stated that “preserving historically significant houses of worship, cemeteries, and settlements is the main goal of the organization.

“Not only does Vilkhivtsi synagogue stand as a unique object of the Jewish heritage, but also as a witness to many historical events.  Since the very construction of the synagogue, the territory of Vilkhivtsi has been under the influence of many countries and political regimes.  On the verge of collapse overall, the synagogue’s walls remained sturdy. Adorned with olive tree branches and the star of David, its antique and unique ceiling painting was preserved.  Today, there is no Jewish community in Vilkhivtsi, so we plan to open a Jewish heritage museum in the building.  We are confident that soon Vilkhivtsi synagogue will become well-known not only in Ukraine, but far beyond,” stated Ms. Khorun.

In October 2020, Heritage Springs Inc. launched the renovation of the synagogue.  By the end of November, the synagogue’s roof over 295 sq.m. had been completely replaced.  During the renovation, Heritage Springs Inc. plans to preserve the unique style and historic spirit of the synagogue to the greatest extent possible.
